Tracking Jobs using Job Aggregators, RSS Feeds & Feed Readers

The Internet, Search Engines and the amount of information that is available on the internet has changed the way we work. While this has opened many opportunities for us as recruiters it also has created another problem. Too much information. The questions is how do we manage the flow of information that comes our way so it does not affect our productivity?

.
If we take a look at just the marketing side of recruiting there are three technology tools if leveraged correctly can help us automate and streamline the way we search for and keep track of job postings. These technologies are Job Aggregators, RSS and Feed Readers.

.
A Job Aggregator is a website like SimplyHired or Indeed that aggregates and automatically collects job postings from multiple job sites. Job Aggregators alone can save recruiters and job seekers the time from having to visit multiple sites every time they want to see if there is new content.

.
RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication. You can go to Wikipedia.org for a detailed definition but basically it is a technology that allows web publishers to automatically publish web content to individuals that have subscribed to the RSS feed. The benefit is users do not have to go and check the website of their choice instead when new content is published it is automatically sent via RSS to them.

.
Feed Readers or Feed Aggregators are software programs that collect, organize and display RSS content. Microsoft Outlook offers a way to collect RSS feeds or there are a number of other free Feed Readers like NewsGator or Google Reader that can do this as well.

.
When recruiters use these three technologies together they can streamline how they research and track job opportunities. The basic workflow should look something like this. Set up and configure your Feed Reader, visit your Job Aggregator of choice, run your job search and subscribe to your job search results by clicking the RSS feed subscribe button that is typically found above the search results. Now all you need to do is open your Feed Reader on a daily basis and any new jobs will appear.

.
If used correctly, these three technologies can help you track jobs in your market, help you expand your practice geographically or break into a new market of your choice.
